08 March 2012 1930 – St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe

Concert: “Liturgy of St John Chrysostom”

St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe congratulates the English Chamber Choir on its Fortieth Anniversary.

In October 2011 the English Chamber Choir launched a ‘Friends’ scheme, with two short concerts, followed by refreshments, in St Andrew’s. Its ‘Friends’ also joined parishioners and members of the Castle Baynard Ward Club for the Carol Service on 13 December; and this month they were invited to a performance of Fauré’s Requiem that the ECC had been asked to perform at St Martin-in-the-Fields.

Concert by the English Chamber Choir

on Thursday 8 March at 7.30 pm

As part of its Fortieth Anniversary celebrations, a concert by the English Chamber Choir is being held at St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe on Thursday 8th March at 7.30 pm. A glass of wine will be available from 7.00 pm, with the performance starting at 7.30 pm and lasting just under an hour. Admission will be free, and refreshments will be available afterwards (a donation towards the cost of these would be much appreciated).

The choir will be singing Tchaikovsky’s Liturgy of St John Chrysostom, together with a pair of motets by Tchaikovsky: How blessed are they and Now the powers of Heaven. We are delighted that the distinguished composer Ivan Moody (himself a priest of the Greek Orthodox Church) will sing the chant.

Tchaikovsky may be better known as a composer of ballets and symphonies, but his Church music is equally inspired and rich in its harmonies and typically Russian low bass sonorities.

“Liturgy of St John Chrysostom”

Литургия св. Иоанна Златоуста

Tchaikovsky’s Liturgy of St John Chrysostom was sung here by the English Chamber Choir in July 2010 when the church held its hugely popular ‘Russian Evening’, which was a celebration of the Anglican liturgy with music from the Orthodox tradition, a talk, Eucharist and Slavic refreshments.

Shakespeare’s Globe celebrates London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games with unprecedented multi-lingual Shakespeare Festival

Shakespeare’s Globe has announced its plans to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games with an unprecedented multi-lingual Shakespeare project. For the first time ever in a single theatre season, all the plays of Shakespeare will be presented, each in a different language, each by a different company from around the world. Over the course of six weeks, beginning on Shakespeare’s birthday, 23 April 2012, the Globe will host a kaleidoscope of 38 international theatre companies, from some of the most respected to some of the newest, to present every one of Shakespeare’s 38 plays in a different language. This project will be the most ambitious multilingual Shakespeare project ever attempted, building on a long tradition of international Shakespeare productions in London.

Shakespeare’s Globe announces plans to build an indoor Jacobean theatre

Work will begin November 2012 Shakespeare’s Globe has confirmed plans to move forward with the completion of an indoor Jacobean theatre, the shell of which already exists on the Globe site. This will be the most complete recreation of an English renaissance indoor theatre yet attempted. The indoor theatre will seat around 320 people, with two tiers of galleried seating and an authentic pit seating area, which will provide a uniquely intimate and intense theatre experience. Some of Shakespeare’s greatest plays – The Tempest, Cymbeline and The Winter’s Tale – were written for an entirely different space to the outdoor Elizabethan playhouses. By restoring the indoor Jacobean theatre to its intended purpose, the Globe will be able to further its understanding of theatre practices at that time and explore the unique relationship between actor and audience in England’s earliest indoor theatres.
